Since the beginning of June we have a new colleague at Global Campus, Martin Sokolov. Martin is from Sofia, Bulgaria and finished a Computer Science degree from Sofia University in 2022.
Together with his girlfriend he decided to seek a new challenge abroad, ending up moving to The Netherlands. In 2025, he completed his Artificial Intelligence masters with his masters thesis on investigating NP-complete problems, proving their tractability, and tackling their hardness using approximations and analyzing their performance beyond the worst-case.
I am interested in the fields of Parameterized Algorithms, Graph Algorithms, Combinatorial Optimization and Network Science. As a Software Engineer I am intrigued in low-level solutions, I have been experimenting more with C/C++ and Rust. I am always interested in projects that use Data/Databases/Search solutions.
At GlobalCampus my main responsibilities are in the role of a back-end engineer. As the amount of data in the field is immense, coming up with effective solutions for storage, retrieval and search is vital for the customers. Building such pipelines is relatively new for me, but working with the experienced team at GlobalCampus has allowed me to learn fast and contribute to our goals. As our processes are tightly connected to machine learning algorithms, I am using my background in AI to research new and upcoming methods to integrate with our systems and ensure that our product is always innovative.
Outside of work, Martin can be found on the football field at Hyenas FC, the tennis courts at Olympos or exploring some small village in the Netherlands with his girlfriend. He also become a fan of the Dutch soccer team.
One remark from Martin (taken from uu ics stt):
" Why Memphis Depay? The Belgian commentator made a beautiful remark when Memphis Depay was replaced with Wout Weghorst and everybody started cheering: `he (M.D.) believes that they applaud for him ...`. "
